06/23/2026 TB Testing

Kelly-Louise Poggetti, City of Palo Alto

Palo Alto is evaluating whether to update its TB clearance requirements for certain classifications. Several neighboring school districts have recently begun accepting a self-administered Adult TB Risk Assessment in lieu of more traditional documentation.

Please share a copy of, or a link to, your current TB requirements or related policy materials. This information will help inform the City’s review and support our evaluation of potential options.

Thanks so much!

Our policy is as follows: State law requires the City to test employees assigned to certain job classifications for tuberculosis (TB) throughout their employment. Employees assigned to "first responder-oriented" classifications (e.g., police officers, firefighters, etc.) must be tested at the time of hire and every year thereafter; Community and Cultural Services (CCS) employees assigned to work with school age children in the City's "recreation/enrichment/childcare" programs must be tested at the time of hire and every four years thereafter.  Human Resources is responsible for ensuring TB testing is completed for all new hires as part of the Pre-employment Physical Exam process1. Department supervisors are responsible for ensuring all on-going TB testing is carried out and documented in compliance with State law.

The procedures for each department are attached. Thanks!
